California Tax Extension Form 2023

File Your Taxes Today!

Avoid Late Filing Penalties with Automatic 6-Month Extension

California Franchise Tax Board Reminds Taxpayers of April 15th Deadline

SACRAMENTO - The California Franchise Tax Board (FTB) urges taxpayers to file their 2023 taxes by the April 15th deadline to avoid late filing penalties. While the federal government has granted an automatic six-month extension to file individual income tax returns, taxpayers must still meet the original deadline to avoid penalties.

To file an automatic extension of time to file US Individual Income Tax Return, taxpayers must complete Form 4868 and submit it on or before the regular due date of their return. This extension applies to the 2023 tax returns due on April 15, 2024, providing additional time for individuals and businesses to gather necessary documents and complete their tax filings.

Taxpayers should note that the extension only applies to the filing deadline and does not extend the time for paying taxes owed. Any taxes due must still be paid by the original due date. Failure to pay the taxes owed by the deadline may result in additional penalties and interest charges.

The FTB encourages taxpayers to visit the agency's website at www.ftb.ca.gov for more information on filing taxes, including instructions for Form 540 and information on the Federal Earned Income Credit (EIC).
